The US-led coalition confirmed on Thursday the death of a top ISIS jihadist leader in an airstrike earlier this week.

“Abu Jandal al-Kuwaiti, an ISIS senior leader in Raqqa, was struck and killed by a coalition airstrike near Tabqa Dam, Syria, on December 26,” the US-led coalition confirmed in a statement.

ARA News reported on Tuesday the death of the senior ISIS leader, and now the US-led coalition confirmed his death.

Abu Jandal al-Kuwaiti was the commander of the Islamic State’s (ISIS) military operations in Raqqa.

According to the coalition, he was a previous member of the ISIS’s War Committee and was involved in their retaking of Palmyra, Syria, before being reassigned to Tabqa to try to improve ISIS’s defenses against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

“Abu Jandal was involved in the use of suicide vehicles, IEDs and chemical weapons against the SDF. Because of his associations with ISIS terror attack planners and War Council members, his death will degrade ISIS’s ability to defend Raqqa and launch external operations against the West,” the coalition said on Thursday.

Al-Kuwaiti, also known as Abdulmuhsin al-Zaghelan al-Tarish, has been leading ISIS militants in Raqqa in their fight against the Syrian Democratic Forces.

“He was responsible for protecting the capital of the ISIS alleged Caliphate,” Syrian journalist Mustafa Abde told ARA News, in reference to Raqqa. “His death was one of the most painful blows to the group especially amidst the US-backed SDF progress towards Raqqa city.”

His death came hours after the Syrian Democratic Forces expelled the ISIS radical group from the key town of Jaabar, which was used by ISIS as a supply route between the city of Raqqa and its northwestern countryside and is close to the strategic Tabqa Dam.
