Russia denied reports of soldier deaths in Syria. The Russian Ministry of Defense on Sunday issued a statement saying that its troops in Syria were safe.

“All Russian soldiers in Syria are safe and sound and are fulfilling their duties,” the ministry’s spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.

This comes just one day after the Qatar-based Al Jazeera news network reported that an explosion of a Russian military vehicle near Syria’s western city of Latakia killed at least five soldiers.

Gen. Konashenkov called the report “disinformation”, saying that Al Jazeera “spread fakes.”

In September 2015, Russia launched military operations in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Beside conducting airstrikes against anti-Assad groups, Russia has also sent ground troops and military experts to support the regime’s army forces.
