Allies of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime on Sunday threatened reprisals against any party that carries out “aggression” against Syria.

This comes three days after US missile strikes hit a Syrian airbase in Homs.

“The aggression against Syria oversteps all red lines. We will react firmly to any aggression against Syria and to any infringement of red lines, whoever carries them out,” said a statement from the Syria-based joint operations room for government backers Russia, Iran and allied forces including Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

“The United States knows very well our ability to react,” it said.

The statement, published by the pro-regime al-Watan newspaper on Sunday, also accused the US of acting before any investigation into the suspected chemical attack was conducted and did not wait for any UN approval.

“We, as Syria’s allies, will increase our military support toward Syria and support its people in many other ways,” the statement said.

The US fired a barrage of 59 cruise missiles at the Shayrat base, killing at least six, in response to a suspected chemical attack on a rebel-held town on Tuesday, that killed dozens of civilians and was widely blamed on the Damascus regime.
