QAMISHLI – People’s Democratic Party’s (HDP) Kurdish official and Member of Parliament in Turkey Selma Irmak said in an exclusive interview with ARA News that the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan “seeks dictatorship in Turkey”.

“Erdogan announced earlier that the peace process between Turkish authorities and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has been terminated,” she said.

“In fact we do not find any difference between the crimes committed against the Kurdish people by the Turkish army, the terrorist group of Islamic State (ISIS) and the Baathist regimes of Assad in Syria and Saddam Hussein in Iraq,” she said.

“These totalitarian regimes and terrorist groups have been trying to obliterate the Kurdish identity for decades,” Irmak said.

The Erdogan-led Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey “is following Assad’s and Hussein’s footsteps regarding the Kurdish issue”, according to the Turkish MP.

“Erdogan wants to play the role of a dictator in Turkey,” she said. “He is seeking to break the will of the Kurdish people in this part of Kurdistan (areas with Kurdish majority in southeastern Turkey).”

“The reasons and motives of Erdogan are the same as that of Assad and Saddam Hussein,” she argued.

“Erdogan insists to continue the war on the Kurdish people, whereas the PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan poses, from his jail, serious moves regarding peace talks,” she told ARA News.

Irmak added that the PKK-linked Kurdish Society Movement (KCK) has repeatedly announced its willingness to stop fighting, “but the Turkish government emphasized that peace attempts have failed”.

With regard to the upcoming early elections in Turkey, Irmak said: “There is no doubt that the AKP is losing the absolute majority. Erdogan and his party have worked hard to prevent the formation of a coalition government by dragging the country into early elections,” she argued.

“In order to take back the votes he lost in the previous election, Erdogan sought to degrade the HDP, but we (in the Peoples’ Democratic Party) are not afraid of holding early elections. On the contrary, we are confident that we will increase the number of our seats in the Parliament from 80 to more than 100.”

Regarding the Kurdish war on ISIS in northern Syria, Irmak said: “The revolution in Rojava (Syria’s Kurdish region) has achieved a victory for all the Kurds. This revolution has remarkably united the different Kurdish factions. Their struggle has also conveyed the voice and bravery of the Kurdish women to the whole world.”
