Hasakah, Syria – A training workshop for journalists and reporters was held by Shar Organization for Development in collaboration with Mandela House in the city of Hasakah in northeastern Syria last week.

Journalist Massoud Omari trained dozens of participants in the four-day workshop, entitled “the news story”.

The workshop included two sections; a theoretical and practical one, where the news story, its types, formation-gathering methods, information sources and features over other journalism types were all tackled.

Trainees headed to Newroz Camp in Derik area (where hundreds of Iraqi Yezidi refugees are based) to collect their stories as a seminar in the workshop.

Speaking to ARA News, director of the Shar Organization, Massoud Berik, said: “The media department in Shar for Development works to activate such workshops due to the scarcity of journalism trainings in the region and the youth’s need to build their capacities.”

Head of Shar’s media department, PIroz Berik, said: “Our department and editorial board of Shar Magazine work to build the journalists’ capacities in northern Syria.”

“Workshops on news stories are rare. It did not get enough space to be tackled like other genres,” Perik told ARA News.

He also pointed out that such a workshop is meant to train the largest number of citizens possible and would be included within sustainable program.

Shar for Development attempts to build a stable, peaceful, culturally and economically developed civic society in Syria, where teamwork, general liberties, transparency in institutional work prevail, according to the organization’s objectives.
