Urfa, Turkey – The Minister of Education in the Syrian Interim Government (led by the Syrian National Coalition SNC), Dr. Mehi al-Dien Banana, and his deputy, Dr. Ferhad Sheikh Bakr, met the Syrian fugitive teachers and school directors on Sunday in Urfa city-south of Turkey- where they discussed a number of problems and suggestions.
“The Ministry prepared a proposal to establish a number of schools and institutes for Syrians with a budget of 240 million dollars. However, the fund required is not available as we have few donors,” minister Banana said. “There is a forthcoming international conference for the Friends of Syria to support the (SNC-linked) Education Ministry.”
Teachers and students-parents who attended the meeting criticized school directors for “the mechanism of appointing teachers and accepting students that is based on nepotism”.
The attendees also criticized the ministry for “not helping university students in applying for non-Syrian universities in exile and approving the new certificates”.
Teachers also complained of “not receiving sufficient regular salaries and not supporting schools”.
In this regard, some teachers suggested taking 25 TL -12 USD- from each student to cover schools’ expenditures and pay staff salaries.
The minister concluded the meeting with a number of promises and clarifications. He also asked the attendees to submit their suggestions and complaints officially to the ministry to be considered, asking people for more patience as the ministry was newly established.
The Syrian Interim Government, presided by Dr. Ahmad Toama, was constituted on 11 November 2013 by the Syrian National Coalition (SNC).
