Sere Kaniye, Hasaka, Syria ــ The north-eastern Syrian city of Sere Kaniye/Ras al-Ain, where Kurds form a majority of the population, was recently exposed to one of the deadliest attacks by al-Qaeda linked fighters of al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State in Iraq and Sham (ISIS), backed by battalions from the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

On Thursday, residents of Sere Kaniye woke up at 3:00 a.m in the morning on the sounds of tank shells, artillery and mortars, launched by the al-Qaeda linked armed groups in one of the deadliest attacks since the recent fighting between Islamists and the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG).

More than 17 people are reportedly killed in the Thursday’s attack on Sere Kaniye/Ras al-Ain.

The Kurdish forces have reportedly taken over the entire city of Sere Kaniye end of July, after expelling the Islamist fighters out of the vital border crossing which connects the city with Turkey.

According to sources from the YPG, the recent battles intensified in the early morning on Thursday as sounds of explosions were heard.

“There were tank shells targeting different areas in the city before our forces responded to defend the city and its residents against the Islamists’ attack,” the sources said.

The Thursday clashes resulted in the fall of 9 injuries from the YPG and dozens of Islamist fighters fell between killed and injured. “The YPG forces took over a tank and crashed another,” sources told ARA News.

In the countryside of Sere Kaniye/Ras al-Ain, specifically in the village of al-Assadia and al-Maghmoria (on the road to Sere Kaniye–Derbassiyeh) an ambulance carrying some wounded to hospitals in Derbassiyeh was exposed to direct shooting of “RPG” (a shoulder-launched anti-tank weapon). The incident led to the destruction of the car and the death of at least 2 of the crew.

In a linked context, the YPG forces have been put on the alert to cut off some roads and to install barriers for the first time on the road of Sere Kaniye–Abu Rasein.

Remarkably, Sere Kaniye and its countryside witness a state of anxiety among the residents as clashes continue between the Kurdish forces and Islamist fighters.
