Derik, Syria – The Kurdish Assayish forces (linked to the Democratic Union Party PYD) blocked on Saturday all roads leading to the city of Derik in northeastern Syria, preventing movement from and to the city.
Although the action paralysed the movement in the area, the Assayish leadership did not issue any statements concerning the roads blockage in Derik environs. However, a member of the Assayish, who preferred anonymity, told ARA News that the forces received information about possible car bomb attacks against the city.
Similar step was taken in the oil-rich city of Rumailan where all entrances and exists of the city were blocked by the PYD-linked Assayish forces. While local sources in Qamishli city talked bout blockage of Qamishli-Hasakah highway.
“All buses heading from Qamishli to Hasakah were stopped by the Assayish members and returned back to the city,” several passengers confirmed to ARA News.
Media outlets close to the PYD reported that the Assayish is trying to protect civilians in Syria’s northeastern areas against “possible attacks”.
Meanwhile, the Popular Protection Units (YPG) –military wing of the PYD– installed several checkpoints on the highways linking different Kurdish areas, local sources reported.
