Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan – In a press conference held in the Israeli National Security Studies Institute on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country “supports the Kurdish ambition of independence”.
“Kurds are strugglers. They proved their political commitment and moderation, consequently they deserve political independence,” Netanyahu argued.
The Israeli PM added: “Israel will fight the extremist Islamic terrorism that expands in the region (in a reference to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant ‘ISIL’).”
Netanyahu’s statement followed his Foreign Minister’s, Avigdor Lieberman, anticipation of dividing Iraq and the potential establishment of an independent Kurdish state.
In this regard, the Kurdish writer Hauwas Mahmoud told ARA News that the Israeli attitudes “serve the Kurds’ interests”.
“If Israel is serious, it can convince the United States to recognize Iraqi Kurdistan as a Kurdish State,” Mahmoud said.
According to Mahmoud, many Arab and Islamic countries pretend to have “brotherly relations” with Kurds. “But they dissimulate and kill their own peoples. So we cannot easily trust their intentions towards the Kurdish ambition of independence in Iraq.”
“It is the Kurds’ chance, under current disorderly situations, retardation of Arab Administration and critical sectarian conflict, to unify and announce their state if there is an international recognition,” Mahmoud told ARA News.
Iraq has been through Sunni-Shiite sectarian conflict led to ISIL’s as well as armed Sunni groups’ domination on many areas middle and west of Iraq recently, which will apparently lead to the division of the country.
