Qamishli, Syria – In collaboration with the Inter-Faith Forum and Mashuq al-Khaznawi Foundation, MAV Organization for Human Rights held a three-day workshop on peaceful coexistence in the city of Qamishlo (Qamishli), northeastern Syria.
The workshop tackled the definition, necessity and roles of political parties and women in the process of peaceful coexistence.
It also highlighted the importance of tolerance and democracy as well as the negative impacts of extremism and armament on the Syrian society.
One of the city’s religious leaders, Mullah Abdullah, presided as host at the workshop. Moreover, attendees visited the Syriac Orthodox church and met clergymen there for better understanding of Christianity.
Speaking to ARA News, Mahmoud Omar, member of board of trustees at MAV, said: “Due to the practices of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in the region, many parties, youth groups and women assemblies asked our organization to hold a peaceful coexistence workshop similar to the one we held in April 2014.”
Omar mentioned that Sabri Mirza was hosted in the workshop as a well-known Yezidi political figure to talk about the Yezidi religion and the threats it encounters at the moment both in Syria and Iraq.
Omar pointed out the importance of their work in such a diverse society where “the role of civic society organizations is to reinforce the concepts of coexistence, equity, justice and acceptance.”
The MAV organization was established after the Qamishlo incidents in 2004 (the Kurdish anti-Assad uprising in Syria) to spread the culture of human rights and observe detainee situations before Syrian courts.
The organization published many booklets based on the Universal Declaration for Human Rights and a number of international treaties and covenants. It also attended Iraqi Kurdistan’s elections in 2009 as a member of the International Observers Network.
Different workshops pertaining to the topics of constitutions, political and electoral systems as well as election observations were held by MAV organization in northern Syria.
