Geneva, Switzerland – On Monday, the Syrian Foreign Minister, Walid al-Moualim, said that Iran is supporting the Russian efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in his country.
al-Moualim’s statement came during a visit to Tehran.
Representatives of the Syrian opposition will join peace talks in Moscow this week.
The upcoming meeting between delegations from the Syrian regime and the opposition will be held under the sponsorship of Russia and with the attendance of its Deputy FM, Mikhail Bogdanov.
After holding a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, al-Moualim told reporters in Tehran that Iran backs the Russian-sponsored peace talks on Syria.
“There is no doubt Iran will help achieve a political solution in Syria.”
Iran is considered the main regional ally of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his regime.
