Hasakah, Syria – During the past few days, the Syrian regime forces prevented dozens of stranded civilians in both the Jura and the Qusour districts in the city of Deir ez-Zor, from leaving their houses to seek safer areas outside the city, local activists reported on Saturday.
For more than two months, the city of Deir ez-Zor has been besieged by militants of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS).
Speaking to ARA News in this regard, a group of activists from Deir ez-Zor reported that the pro-regime forces began to follow a strategy similar to that of the IS group: that of preventing civilians from fleeing areas under its control in the city, especially after the blockade imposed by IS insurgents two months ago.
“The IS radicals seek, through the blockade, to weaken the regime’s power in those areas,” the source added.
The source pointed out that the IS group prevents the entry of everything into the city, including food, as well as any cross traffic to those areas whose residents are accused of “heresy” and “apostasy” by the group.
Zaid Furati, an activist from Deir ez-Zor, told ARA News: “We have noticed over the past two days that the regime forces have prevented civilians from evacuating the regime-held districts of Jura and Qusour by installing several new security checkpoints at the exits of those districts.
Furati pointed out that dozens of civilians sought to flee as a result of hunger and poverty which struck their areas in addition to the random IS-launched bombing during the past week, claiming the lives of several civilians and caused injuries to dozens.
A number of university students who left Deir ez-Zor last week stated to ARA News that these neighborhoods endure a tragic reality in light of the severe shortage of food from the marketــ except for some types of vegetables grown on the outskirts of these areas.
The National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary Forces and the Opposition (SNC) released a statement saying that more than 300.000 civilians living inside the neighborhoods of Jura and Qusour of Deir ez-Zor are experiencing a tragic situation and encountering hardships due to the siege imposed by the pro-Assad forces on the one hand, and militants of the Islamic State on the other hand.
