Latakia, Syria – At least two people were killed and 14 more injured in a rocket attack on Latakia, the coastal heartland of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, local sources reported on Thursday.
The deadly attack was reportedly launched by rebel factions, which hold strategic hills in the countryside of Latakia, where Alawites constitute a majority.
“Several rockets hit the city center and the waterfront,” media activist Salloum al-Shekh reported.
“Most of the injured, who were transferred to the national hospital of Latakia, are in critical conditions,” he told ARA News.
Rebel factions of al-Fatih Army (Jaish al-Fatih) seized control of large areas in Sahl al-Ghab in the countryside of Latakia.
The rebel fighters advanced towards Joreen town in the vicinity of Latakia, in preparation to storm the city that constitutes a major stronghold for Assad regime.
