GENEVA – At least 3770 refugees died in the Mediterranean sea in 2015 while trying to reach Europe, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Thursday.

The refugees, who were seeking asylum in Europe after fleeing war zones in the Middle East, have been taken dangerous routes through smugglers.

According to the IOM, the year 2015 was the deadliest on record for refugees crossing the Mediterranean.

April was the deadliest month, when a tragic incident took place claiming lives of 800 refugees who drowned in the sea. Only 28 refugees survived from that boat and were rescued by the Italian coastguards.

The UNHCR said that 1,000,573 people had reached Europe across the Mediterranean, mainly to Greece and Italy, in 2015, half a million of them Syrians escaping war in their country.
