DUHOK – More than 12,ooo militants from the Islamic State (ISIS) are fighting to keep Mosul city, the group’s major bastion in Iraq, officials said on Sunday.

The ISIS-held city of Mosul and its suburbs have been under heavy bombardment by the US-led coalition’s air forces and allied ground troops of the Kurdish Peshmerga and the Iraqi army for nearly two years.

“There are more than 12,000 ISIS militant fighters in Mosul, trying to maintain the group’s positions in the city and its suburbs,” said Osama al-Nujaifi, head of United Coalition in Iraq.

Al-Nujaifi confirmed that 7,000 ISIS jihadis are inside the city of Mosul and at least 5,000 others are fighting in the suburbs.

Mosul has been under ISIS control since June 2014, when the group stormed the city after the withdrawal of the Iraqi army.
