Erbil – Isaac Tutumlu Lopez, a 31-year-old Kurdish-Spanish racing driver, denied a report that he is trying to sell oil from Syria’s Kurdish region of Rojava to Iraqi Kurdistan and Turkey.
The Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad reported on Thursday that Tutumlu stopped racing and wanted to trade in oil as a middleman for the Doyen Group, a London-based hedge fund.
Tutumlu denied the report in an exclusive interview with ARA News, and he wished the news about the oil deal was true. “About the oil deal I wish it was true; that would mean I would have made a lot of money and with part of that money I could have financed the Kurdistan Racing Team by myself. Unfortunately all is a lie and I was really surprised when I saw the news, I guess they need to sell newspapers so they invent stories to promote the sales,” he said.
“Unfortunately we had to stop the activity of the Barzani Racing Team due to a lack of support and financial solutions because of the [economic] crisis that the Kurdistan Region suffered while facing ISIS and the problems with Baghdad,” Tutumlu said.
“I am still racing, this year I raced for Audi Sport official team Car Collection Motorsport. I hope we can be back with the Barzani Racing Team very soon; we have a possibility to create a new team called Kurdistan Racing Team and we have support from a big car brand to make it happen but we have to find a local partner in Kurdistan interested in investing, helping and sponsoring the activity along with the car brand 50% each,” he told ARA News.
Tutumlu was born in the city of Barcelona. His father is a Kurd from a village near Ankara, Turkey, while his mother is a Catalan born in Barcelona. He started at a young age with go-karting and continued down that path till the age of 20.
He won numerous championships such as Formula Catalunya, Kart Club Valles Championship, Campionat de Catalunya, among others.
Since the age of 20, Tutumlu has been racing in touring cars, GT’s and Prototypes. He managed to win several championships such as the Nissan 350Z Challenge, Open Prototype in Spain, Winter European Radical Series, International GT Open, IberGT, Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.
