A delegation from the Kurdish National Council (KNC) arrived in Washington on Monday, after being invited by the US State Department, officials said.

Majdal Delli, a member of the Kurdish Yekiti Party, told ARA News that the KNC-leader Ibrahim Biro (Yekiti party), Kamiran Hajo (KDP-S), chairman of the KNC foreign relations office and Siamand Hajo (Future Movement), a representative of KNC foreign relations office arrived in Washington.

“Tomorrow they will meet with officials of the US State Department and will discuss the Syrian situation with the Americans and especially the Kurdish situation,” Delli said.

The KNC delegation is also expected to discuss the return of 5,000 Rojava Peshmergas from Iraqi Kurdistan to northern Syria.

Until now, the People’s Protection Units (YPG) have refused the return of the Rojava Peshmergas, suggesting there should be only one military force in Syrian Kurdistan, arguing that the existence of two military forces could lead to a civil war.

In the 1990s, the Iraqi Kurdish parties PUK and KDP fought a civil war that ended by US intervention in 1998.

However, the KNC has been lobbying for the return of the Rojava Peshmerga forces that now fight on the frontlines against ISIS in Iraqi Kurdistan, and want the US to pressure the YPG to allow the return of these fighters.

Masrour Barzani, the head of the Kurdistan Region’s Security Council (KRSC), earlier told US officials that the entry of Rojava Peshmerga could lessen regional tensions. “Peshmerga of Rojava can be the bridge to lessen regional tensions and a force multiplier in the anti-ISIS campaign,” he said.

Some suggest that the Rojava Peshmerga’s entry could lessen tensions between the Syrian Kurds and Turkey.

This is the second time the KNC visits Washington. In May 2012, a KNC delegation led by Abdulhakim Bashar also visited Washington.
