Kobane, Syria – After infiltrating into the city of Kobane, militants of the Islamic State reportedly killed dozens of Kurdish civilians in the city, local sources reported on Friday.
At least 180 civilians were killed by IS militants, who infiltrated the city of Kobane on Thursday.
Local sources told ARA News that about a hundred militants were able to infiltrate the city at dawn of Thursday, coming from the southern countryside and disguised by uniforms of the Free Syrian Army’s (FSA) fighters.
The killing spree, which took place mostly inside Kobane itself on Friday, was widely seen as vengeance for a series of defeats inflicted on the jihadists by Kurdish fighters in recent weeks.
A Kurdish military source in Kobane told ARA News: “The biggest strike Kobane received was from some factions of Burkan al-Furat rebels, specifically from Raqqa’s Rebels brigade who were stationed in the neighborhood of Maktala, eastern Kobane. These fighters dissented from their leadership with their weapons and joined the radical group of the Islamic State,” the source added.
“The second strike was from the newly displaced people of Tel Abyad and Raqqa, who passed on their cars without sufficient inspection, while they were IS affiliated members, who hid their weapons under the luggage and mattresses, and entered the city easily to turn into cells waiting for the signal to start their crimes against Kurdish civilians in Kobane,” the source told ARA News.
Checkpoints of the Kurdish forces reportedly failed to inspect some of the cars entering into the city, mainly from the Turkish border north of Kobane.
Several car bombings hit different locations inside Kobane, and other members of the extremist group started slaughtering Kurdish civilians, mostly women and children.
“At least 180 civilians were barbarically slaughtered,” the Kurdish military source told ARA News on Friday.
In the meantime, the Kurdish forces were able to rescue a group of about 80 civilians who were taken hostage by the radical group in the Canadian Restaurant center north of the city.
Artillery shelling and clashes hit the building of Doctors Without Borders, amid the failure of two attempts to bring in reinforcements for “ISIS “across the Euphrates River to the town of Shuyukh on Friday morning, where they infiltrated into the city dressed in YPG forces uniforms.
Thousands of civilians are currently stranded at the Turkish border after escaping the war-torn city of Kobane, eyewitnesses told ARA News.
More than 150 victims have been buried in mass graves west Kobane and in the villages of Halanj and Sherran.
On Friday midnight, fierce clashes took place between the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the IS hardline group in central Kobane, a YPG source reported.
