TEL ABYAD – Fierce clashes hit the YPG-held Tel Abyad suburb in the northern countryside of Raqqa province between the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS), a military source reported on Sunday.

At least seven ISIS extremists were reportedly killed and several others wounded.

Speaking to ARA News in Tel Abyad, YPG spokesman Habun Osman said: “Our units (YPG) have spotted a number of ISIS extremists trying to plant mines in the vicinity of Sharkerak village near Tel Abyad city.”

“Our troops have clashed with Daesh (ISIS) with light and medium weapons, killing more than seven terrorists and wounding several others,” he said.

Osman added that ISIS sent another group of militants from Raqqa to the Sharkerak–Ain Issa highway “in order to bolster their fellows”.

“Subsequent to fierce clashes, our units were finally able to expel the Daesh terrorists from the area. We are currently searching for mines left behind by the terrorists,” the YPG spokesman in Tel Abyad told ARA News.

Syrian Kurdish YPG forces regained full control of Tel Abyad on June 30, 2015, after expelling ISIS militant fighters. The city, located on the border with Turkey, was formerly an ISIS stronghold, serving as a key conduit for the terror group to bring in weapons and jihadists, beside exporting oil to the black market through Turkey.

After less than two months of the liberation of Tel Abyad city by the Kurdish forces, local residents held a conference and established a House of Notables that included public figures and tribal leaders from different social components to run the public institutions in the city.
