Zakho – The Islamic State (ISIS) on Thursday executed dozens of civilians in Mosul city. The unfortunate men had been charged with treason, apostasy and spying for “enemy forces.”

“The arrested men were charged with treason,” local media activist Abdullah al-Malla told ARA News. “They were publicly executed in central Mosul on Thursday.”

The ISIS-led Islamic Police, also known as Diwan al-Hisba, arrested more than 40 people earlier on Wednesday. Family members had reportedly been inquiring after their relative’s fate.

Raafat al-Zarari, the head of Nineveh Media Centre, told ARA News that at “least 32 of the arrestees were executed by firing squad on Thursday – ISIS accused them of leaking information about the group’s deployments.”

The ISIS-led Sharia Court of Mosul said in a statement that the suspects had communicated with “enemy forces,” in reference to the Kurdish Peshmerga and the Iraqi Army. The court determined that those communications represented the men’s conscious abandonment of Islam.

Thursday’s executions came amid intensifying military operations by the Kurdish Peshmerga and the Iraqi security forces. The Islamic State has been hemorrhaging for three weeks, being forced back into Mosul, its de facto capital.

Muhammad Abd Rabouh, a member of the Iraqi Parliament, said that the recent spate of executions demonstrates that panic is sweeping through the Islamic State’s ranks. “Publicly executing innocent civilians in such a brutal way […] is a clear indication of the group’s collapse inside Mosul,” he said.

“As Iraqi forces continue their progress towards the heart of Mosul city, ISIS is trying to show the people that it’s still in control,” MP Rabouh continued. “Soon Mosul will be liberated, and the world won’t see such barbaric acts in this city anymore.”
