ISIS media chief in Syria killed by coalition airstrike

The Counter-Terrorism (CT) department of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) announced on Thursday that a senior ISIS media official was killed in a coalition air strike in Syria.

“Our CT Department confirms ISIS Chief of Media, Khalid Hamza Al-Maamouri, was killed in a targeted CJTFOIR airstrike in Syria on 16 April,” the KRSC said in a statement.

“Al-Maamouri, known as Abu Ali Al-Janoubi, was also Emir of Admin for a brigade attached to the group’s General Security Dept (Diwan),” the KRSC added.

The Kurdish Counter-Terrorism Department and the US-led coalition cooperate since August 2014 to remove ISIS leadership from the battlefield in both Syria and Iraq. They started to carry out joint operations in 2015.

The Kurds have provided intelligence to the US-led coalition which led to targeted airstrikes taking out local senior ISIS leaders such as Mullah Shwan in September 2015 near Hawija and Falah al-Kurdi in October 2015.
