The chief of the Kurdistan Region’s Security Council (KRSC), Masrour Barzani, is leading a visit to the United States next week to reaffirm the special relationship between the Kurdistan Region and the United States, the KRSC said on Sunday.
“The visit is an opportunity to review measures to strengthen the already strong partnership and advance common interests,” KRSC said in a statement.
“On Monday Chancellor Barzani will lead a high-level delegation from the Kurdistan Region to meet principle members of the US National Security Council. During the visit, the Chancellor will underscore Kurdistan’s future bilateral relations with Iraq and the United States; immediate and long-term political and security challenges, and regional military and political developments,” the KRSC added.
The KRG delegation includes Dr. Fuad Hussein, Chief of Staff to The President of the Kurdistan Region, and KRG’s Representative to the United States, Ms. Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman and will also most likely discuss the planned Kurdish independence referendum.
“During meetings and events, Chancellor Barzani will discuss the importance of continued US military and political support to the Kurdistan Region and its Peshmerga Forces. The Chancellor will propose strategies to prevent a resurgence of ISIS in Iraq and inter-communal conflict, including the need to address bedrock issues that preceded the war on ISIS,” the KRSC said.
“This is Chancellor Barzani’s second visit to the United States in the last six months, reflecting the strategic importance of our partnership and the strong ties between the people of the Kurdistan Region and the United States,” the KRSC added.
